What is an IFSC Code?

  • Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is a unique 11-character code allocated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to bank branches that participate in electronic fund transfer systems such as RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement), NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer), and IMPS (Immediate Payment Service).

    IFSC format (overview)

    • The code is 11 characters: four letters (usually the bank identifier), a reserved fifth character (0), and six characters identifying the branch.
    • You need the correct IFSC so money is credited to the intended branch and account.

    Where IFSC is used

    • Account-based transfers through net banking or mobile banking (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS).
    • Some forms and mandates may ask for IFSC along with account number and beneficiary name.

Note: Always verify IFSC and account details on your bank’s official channels before high-value transfers. Compare transfer modes: NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS.
